So, You Want to Write & Publish
a Vegan Recipe Book?

Maybe you’ve been thinking about it recently, or maybe it’s been a while, maybe that’s been your intention when you started your blog, but then you gave it up, so let me ask you this:

What’s been stopping you?

Why haven’t you done it yet?

Is it because it’s too much work? It’s too complicated? You’re not sure where to start?

Or you just don’t have time right now to get it done, but you’ll surely get to it in the future? 

Is it because you think that there are enough books out there already, and there’s no need for another one? If you’re thinking this way, then you need to read my post 7+ Reasons Why EVERY Vegan Blogger Simply MUST Write and Publish a Book — Starting TODAY!

Is it because you believe that your writing is not good enough? (Truth is you don’t need to be another Tolstoy or Dostoevsky to be able to help and inspire people with your writing.)

Is it because it’s too hard? Look, I’m not talking here about finding a publisher and getting your book in print — although this is certainly possible, and you should absolutely pursue it too, but you’re right, it may take a long time, and is not so simple (one of my clients has been searching for a publisher for years, and her book still hasn’t been published).

You may be coming up with all kinds of excuses, thinking that you’re not qualified, don’t have what it takes, blah, blah, blah, but I’m telling you that YOU, as a vegan blogger, or even just someone who’s passionate about the subject — you are ABSO-F*CKING-LUTELY QUALIFIED to write and publish a book.

Yes!

If you’ve ever written a blog post — you’re qualified.
If you’ve ever written an email or a social media update — you are qualified.
If you can talk and actually have something to say — you are qualified.
And even if you don’t think you have anything interesting to say — you are still qualified (you can interview others, or get someone help you with writing, for example, anyone can do that!).

So, here is the thing.

If you are a vegan blogger and have been writing and publishing on your blog for a while, you probably already have enough content for a book (or two, or even more).

So, if that thought of publishing a book ever crossed your mind, there is no reason why you should not take the matters in your own hands and get that baby of yours created and released into the world RIGHT NOW! 

Maybe even TODAY!

But if not today, because that may be too aggressive, then — depending on how much content you already have, and how soon you get over yourself and all your LAME EXCUSES on why you cannot do it — probably by the end of the week, or month, and certainly by the end of 6 weeks from now you can have your first book completed and published on Amazon Kindle!

How does that sound to you?

Getting your book published is EASY, and there are many reasons to do it (and if you want to know some of them, read this post , so today I challenge you to finally get it done!

Why not start today?

How hard it can be? Here is what you’ll need to do:

Disclaimer: this is a checklist for those of you who already have a blog or some other content sitting on their hard drives or in your journal. (If you don’t have that, you can follow this outline too, except, you’ll actually have to sit down and write your content now, instead of taking what you already have. Choose a topic, create an outline, and commit to writing at least one chapter per day. Then follow the points from 4-9.)

1.) Take detailed inventory of your content

Go to your blog and open your site-map or content page.

If you don’t have that page, you’ll have to figure out how to make a list of all the posts that you’ve written over the years. If you have written about various topics, then sort them by category.  Depending on how many posts you have, this may take a few minutes, or if you have to do it by hand and you have a lot of articles — even a couple of hours. 

2.) Choose a topic for your book

The questions to ask yourself are:

How are you helping your readers?
Why are they coming to read your blog?
What problem do your posts help readers to solve?
What is the message you most want to share with them?
What is the transformation you can help them achieve?

Take an honest look at that content and choose the topic for your book based on the category that has the most posts (obviously that tells you something about your passion and expertise), the most comments (tells you about what your readers enjoyed), or has received the most traffic (you may look at your site stats).

If your blog is a recipe site, then perhaps you’re teaching them how to bake delicious vegan goodies, or make raw desserts. Or maybe you are gluten intolerant and are teaching others how to create gluten free desserts.  Or you write about cruelty free fashions — or have a blog about raising vegan children. 

(If you’re not particularly happy with any of your content — at least not enough to wish you could publish a book on that, then it’s time to think about what is it that you really want to talk about? Why are you not saying it? What is it that you want to help people with? What’s your true passion? That’s something to consider for the future, however, right now, for this exercise — choose something that is already there.)

3.) Create an outline/Table of contents

Select the posts to be included in your book and create a table of contents. Depending on how long your posts are aim at including at 10-30 posts. Don’t try to cram too much content, we’re not trying to publish a 300-page book here.  Select one topic, one problem that you can help people solve, one ingredient, one recipe type, etc. Aim at about 10,000-30,000 words for your first book. If you have a lot of content — that’s great! You will be able to publish a whole series soon, but for now, let’s get that first one done.

4.) Come up with a MUST-CLICK TITLE for your book

Developing an attention-getting title is perhaps the most critical aspect of book marketing. Start brainstorming title ideas from the start, since it may take you a while to come up with the right one. 

The most important thing you should remember about titles on Amazon and other online book selling sites is this: People don’t read. They scan.

Simply put, if you’re trying to reach me— the book reader, don’t make me work to figure out the meaning of your title and what your book is about, because I’m not going to take the time to do it.

If you don’t grab the reader quickly, they’ll move on.

The reader should be able to read your title in less than five seconds and know exactly, without question, what your book is about. This is easier to do with nonfiction titles, but you fiction folks should adhere to this rule too.

Ideally the title has two sections.

  • The first one is what your book is about.
  • The second with a verb – what results can I get if I read your book.

Don’t try to be too cute, or vague. Don’t make me guess!

Be as specific as possible. For example, if it’s a recipe book, how many recipes will I get? If it’s a solution to a problem, how many steps are involved, how long will it take, etc.?

Examples:

  • Decadent Gluten-Free Vegan Baking: Delicious, Gluten-, Egg- and Dairy-Free Treats and Sweets
  • Gluten-Free Vegan Comfort Food: 30 Simple and Satisfying Recipes, from “Mac and Cheese” to Chocolate Cupcakes
  • Green & Lean: 20 Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes for Building Muscle, Getting Lean, and Staying Healthy
  • The Ultimate Book of Modern Juicing: More than 50 Fresh Recipes to Cleanse, Cure, and Keep You Healthy
  • Level Up Your Day: How to Maximize the 6 Essential Areas of Your Daily Routine

Go to Amazon and look at some titles in your category.

By the way, this rule applies to fiction too, for example:

  • Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail
  • Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

To Do:  Brainstorm 10 titles for books in your series — do this every day or 15 minutes or even a couple of times per day, until you find the one that you love.

5.) Compile the content into one document

Compile the posts you want to include into a Word document (or other word processing software) following the outline. 

6.) Read and edit the content

You may need to add an introduction, delete some sections that don’t belong to the book, add more explanations, etc. This may take a couple of hours, or the whole day.  Ideally, we’re aiming at a book that someone could read in one sitting and immediately start to implement and see results quickly, so make sure it’s brief and to the point. 

7.) Hire someone to design your cover 

Go to Fiverr or Upwork (formerly Odesk) to find someone to do it for you.  (For simple tasks like that, I prefer Fiverr. ) For under 30 dollars, you’ll get great design, plus a few revisions. It may take a few days, or you may have to pay extra for a faster service (you may have to pay extra for fast service.)

Choose someone who has many positive reviews. Take a look at the turn-around time (the same gig may take different amount of time, depending on who’s doing it), plus see if they have a lot of stuff in the queue. If they don’t have a lot of gigs lined up, then you may be able to receive your files faster, on the other hand if they have a lot going on — expect delays.

One thing I want to caution you about — and any good designer will know that — but I just thought that I’ll let you know how to evaluate a design — look at it when it’s really, really tiny and see if you can read any of it, and tell what the book is about. Remember, buyers scan and make split second decisions — don’t make them work too hard! 

8.) Have someone edit, proofread, and format your book

You may do it yourself, if you feel up to it, or hire someone to do it for you. Go to Fiverr or Odesk to find someone to do it for you. Different people specialize in different services, so you may have to hire three different providers. This will be the most time-consuming — but mostly waiting. It may take a few days, or you may have to pay extra for fast service.

9.) Upload the book to Amazon Kindle

Once you have your files, go to Amazon and create an KDP account:

Upload your files, add description, choose categories for your book, and set the price — all of these are important, but for now, I don’t want you to worry about this. You’ll be able to change all that later on.

It takes from a couple of hours to 24 hours to get the book approved and LIVE on Amazon. Use that time wisely. I suggest — celebrating your first book! Once the book is live you’ll be too busy promoting it and telling everyone about it (– including me)!

All together, it shouldn’t take you longer than one or two days on your part, plus some waiting — and BOOM! Just like that — you’ll become a PUBLISHED AUTHOR.
