Developing an attention-getting title is perhaps the most critical aspect of book marketing. Start brainstorming title ideas from the start, since it may take you a while to come up with the right one.
The most important thing you should remember about titles on Amazon and other online book selling sites is this: People don’t read. They scan.
Simply put, if you’re trying to reach me— the book reader, don’t make me work to figure out the meaning of your title and what your book is about, because I’m not going to take the time to do it.
If you don’t grab the reader quickly, they’ll move on.
The reader should be able to read your title in less than five seconds and know exactly, without question, what your book is about. This is easier to do with nonfiction titles, but you fiction folks should adhere to this rule too.
Ideally the title has two sections.
- The first one is what your book is about.
- The second with a verb – what results can I get if I read your book.
Don’t try to be too cute, or vague. Don’t make me guess!
Be as specific as possible. For example, if it’s a recipe book, how many recipes will I get? If it’s a solution to a problem, how many steps are involved, how long will it take, etc.?

- Gluten-Free Vegan Comfort Food: 30 Simple and Satisfying Recipes, from “Mac and Cheese” to Chocolate Cupcakes
- Green & Lean: 20 Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes for Building Muscle, Getting Lean, and Staying Healthy
- The Ultimate Book of Modern Juicing: More than 50 Fresh Recipes to Cleanse, Cure, and Keep You Healthy
- Level Up Your Day: How to Maximize the 6 Essential Areas of Your Daily Routine
Go to Amazon and look at some titles in your category.
By the way, this rule applies to fiction too, for example:
- Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail
- Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia
To Do: Brainstorm 10 titles for books in your series — do this every day or 15 minutes or even a couple of times per day, until you find the one that you love.

5.) Compile the content into one document
Compile the posts you want to include into a Word document (or other word processing software) following the outline.
6.) Read and edit the content
You may need to add an introduction, delete some sections that don’t belong to the book, add more explanations, etc. This may take a couple of hours, or the whole day. Ideally, we’re aiming at a book that someone could read in one sitting and immediately start to implement and see results quickly, so make sure it’s brief and to the point.
7.) Hire someone to design your cover
Go to Fiverr or Upwork (formerly Odesk) to find someone to do it for you. (For simple tasks like that, I prefer Fiverr. ) For under 30 dollars, you’ll get great design, plus a few revisions. It may take a few days, or you may have to pay extra for a faster service (you may have to pay extra for fast service.)
Choose someone who has many positive reviews. Take a look at the turn-around time (the same gig may take different amount of time, depending on who’s doing it), plus see if they have a lot of stuff in the queue. If they don’t have a lot of gigs lined up, then you may be able to receive your files faster, on the other hand if they have a lot going on — expect delays.
One thing I want to caution you about — and any good designer will know that — but I just thought that I’ll let you know how to evaluate a design — look at it when it’s really, really tiny and see if you can read any of it, and tell what the book is about. Remember, buyers scan and make split second decisions — don’t make them work too hard!
8.) Have someone edit, proofread, and format your book
You may do it yourself, if you feel up to it, or hire someone to do it for you. Go to Fiverr or Odesk to find someone to do it for you. Different people specialize in different services, so you may have to hire three different providers. This will be the most time-consuming — but mostly waiting. It may take a few days, or you may have to pay extra for fast service.
9.) Upload the book to Amazon Kindle
Once you have your files, go to Amazon and create an KDP account:
Upload your files, add description, choose categories for your book, and set the price — all of these are important, but for now, I don’t want you to worry about this. You’ll be able to change all that later on.
It takes from a couple of hours to 24 hours to get the book approved and LIVE on Amazon. Use that time wisely. I suggest — celebrating your first book! Once the book is live you’ll be too busy promoting it and telling everyone about it (– including me)!
All together, it shouldn’t take you longer than one or two days on your part, plus some waiting — and BOOM! Just like that — you’ll become a PUBLISHED AUTHOR.
